Brief Summary:
My articles, “Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in Women with Previous Gestational Diabetes” talk about just that.
The article starts out using a historical facts and data to explain what Gestational Diabetes is and some of the studies that
have taken place to be able to identify Gestational Diabetes. Then the article talks about the prevalence of diabetes after
GDM (gestational diabetes mellitus). It explains how the medical field diagnoses GDM by looking at such things as carbohydrate
intolerance and metabolic stress caused from being pregnant. Then the article looks at how we can determine whether or not
the women will have Type 2 Diabetes after being diagnosed with GDM. Then the article gives current recommendations for postpartum
follow-up and ends by explaining how three of the six clinical trials published about diabetes are directed specifically at
women with a history of GDM. The author concludes with a brief summary of what the entire article was talking about.
·
Identify and attempt
to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.
1.) GDM: gestational diabetes mellitus, was first discovered with Case 309 which
happened in 1897 when a woman showed sugar during her pregnancy, but following confinement it disappeared then returned 9
years later as moderate to severe diabetes.
2.) The procedure of measuring a woman fasting plasma glucose level to determine
if she is falling into the early stages of gestational diabetes mellitus.
3.) The concept that the American Diabetes Association recommends that women with
GDM should be screened for diabetes 6 weeks postpartum and should be followed up with subsequent screening for the development
of diabetes or pre-diabetes. Versus, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology makes no specific recommendation on
follow-up other than to suggest that postpartum testing may be performed, despite the absence of data.
·

of this article.
Strengths
·
Very well written
article
·
An abundance of
references
·
Several good statistical
data given
·
Weakness
·
I could honestly
not find any, the author uses statistics, references, and clinical trials to back up his article. He explained the history,
the current, and what the medical field would like to have happen in the future. In all I think that it would be hard to say
that this article had a weakness.
·
How might this
article be useful to you in your further studies and career?
I do not necessarily think that this article will help me in my future
studies but anyone that specializes in diabetes, works with diabetic patients, or for any doctor that deals with pregnant
women’s health could definitely find this article to be of great help.
·
