·
Why did you choose
to review this particular article?
I chose to review this article because, 1) of its relativity to my research topic and 2) also because
it struck me that something as simple as inflammation could cause diabetes.

inflammation. The article also displays e good use of sources well to explain his topic of choice. The article explains the
topic and flows very fluently.

question or make a correlation between things.
·
Brief Summary:
The article by William T. Cefalu brings to light two different studies
down on type 2 diabetes. The first study, which was done by Ortega Martinez de Victoria comments on factors related to macrophage
activation in adipocytes as a source for cytokines for systemic inflammatory effects.
In contrast, a study done by Haus provides data on systemic effects resulting from inflammatory activation, namely,
the relationship of cytokines with circulation lipid intermediates. Then the author gives a detailed back ground of how inflammation
was recorded and discovered over 2,000 years ago by Aulus Cornelius Celsus. Then
the article discussed present day findings and how obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance are all linked to type 2
diabetes. Then a hypothesis for how the initiation of the inflammatory response
in obesity occurs is discussed. Then we go through the three main key points
of inflammation, insulin resistance, and obesity in greater detail. The article ends by discussing relevant questions such
as whether therapies that specifically target inflammation will evolve into future diabetes medications.
·
Identify and attempt
to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.
1. Rubor:
redness and swelling, created by Aulus Cornelius Celsus.
2. Microhypoxia: release of chemokines recruiting macrophages into the adipose tissue and end with the formation of crown-like structures
and adipocyte death.
3. Ortega Martinez de Victoria’s study: comments on factors related
to macrophage activation in adipocytes as a source for cytokines for systemic inflammatory effect
·
Detail the strengths/weaknesses
of this article.
Strengths
·
2 studies done
on the same topic of interest.
·
Well written article
·
Explains in detail
topics that are not commonly known
·
Goes into the past
and present times to find information for the article
Weakness
·
The 2 studies done
on the same topic have completely different outcomes, thus there is now a common find in either study.
·
How might this
article be useful to you in your further studies and career?
The article, personally, will not help me in my future career but
for someone that is doing endocrinology or specializing in diabetes, it will be very helpful. Helpful in the since that it
give insight for people with inflammation. Also for people with obesity, it will be a helpful article to discuss with their
doctor to see if there are any warning signs of getting diabetes if they do not already have them
·
Does the article
include a list of references/citations that can be used to find more information on the topics they cover? Yes, there is a list of references/citations that could be used to find more information on the topics
